The Christmas frenzy is upon us. Driving out of my favorite coffee…

Posted by Lesa Johnson
JOY joy The Christmas frenzy is upon us. Driving out of my favorite coffee spot the other day, I spotted a bumper sticker that said “Don’t Postpone Joy”. I had to laugh and say to myself, “like, Seriously, I control the appearance of joy ? Have you seen these rabid shoppers? Have you seen my checkbook? “. The bumper sticker got me thinking about my current condition where I often find my self writing “fear is a liar” on my hand to overcome what I call “circumstantial perspective” through a fear-focused existence. Joy can definitely be elusive and overshadowed by its shady counter/part, fear and hopelessness. Christmas is the season of joy, not just for festivities but for the arrival of the ultimate first responder, Jesus. His arrival brings hope and joy.   What is Joy ? Is it happiness? Goofy giddiness? Cheer? Webster’s Definition of joy. 1 : a the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires : delight. b : the expression or exhibition of such emotion : gaiety. 2 : a state of happiness or felicity : bliss. I particularly like the part ” the prospect of possessing what one desires: delight”. Christmas and joy are intertwined for me because the angel’s proclamation of the arrival of Jesus our Savior at Christmas “kicked fear to the curb” and declared joy the victor. I love to read the Christmas story. In Luke Chapter 2 it says:8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” It all comes down to my focus, fear or joy ? Today I choose to write something different. I’m going to write “JOY” and leave that as my reminder that temporary struggles are just that, temporary. A Savior who came as a baby in a manger changed dark to light and gave us a gift so that we may “fear not”. Good tidings of Great Joy is a life-changing announcement for an eternal perspective. This busy Christmas, my prayer is that the joy of Christmas and the peace, love and hope that is only from Christ Jesus surround you and your loved ones, today and always.
